For a long time, we’ve been taught to think of self-care as something we do after we’ve earned it. After we’ve worked hard enough, pushed long enough, or reached some goal on the to-do list, rest feels justified. Manifestation, in that framework, becomes another form of effort—just another thing to manage, optimize, or get right.

But over the years, I’ve really come to understand something very clearly. Self-care isn’t something you add on to your life once everything else is handled. It’s the state you’re living from—and that state sets the frequency for everything you experience.

This year, I’ve been thinking about self-care less as an activity and more as an orientation. Less about routines and more about the emotional environment you’re inhabiting day after day. Because the truth is, your life doesn’t respond to what you want as much as it responds to how you’re relating to yourself while you’re living it.

Manifestation Begins With State, Not Strategy

One of the most misunderstood aspects of manifestation is the idea that it’s about visualizing harder, or staying positive, or maintaining the “right” mindset. I've personally found through trial and error that that approach can quickly turn into pressure, especially if you’re already feeling tired or overwhelmed.

What actually shapes your experience is your state—your nervous system, your emotional baseline, the degree to which you feel safe, supported, and resourced in your body.

When you’re living from chronic urgency, self-abandonment, or emotional overload, even good things happening around you can feel heavy. Decisions feel harder. Clarity feels foggy. You might technically be doing everything “right,” but it still feels like you’re swimming upstream.

When your inner world feels steadier, the universe can meet you there. Not because you’ve forced anything to happen, but because you’re no longer relating to everything from tension or depletion.

This is why self-care matters so deeply. Not as a reward, but as a foundation.

What Self-Care Actually Does (That We Don’t Talk About Enough)

Real self-care regulates your nervous system. It softens your internal pace. It creates enough internal safety for intuition to come back online.

From that place:

You make clearer choices.

You notice opportunities you would have otherwise missed.

You stop pushing toward things that don’t actually fit.

You become more receptive to insight, support, and timing.

This isn’t about being calm all the time or bypassing real emotions. It’s more about building a relationship with yourself where you notice when something feels off and respond with care and kindness instead of criticism.

Over time, that relationship changes how you show up everywhere else.

Frequency Is Set in Small, Ordinary Moments

One of the reasons self-care gets misunderstood is because we associate it with big gestures: elaborate routines, perfect mornings, or dramatic resets. But frequency isn’t set in grand moments. It’s truly set in the quiet, small, repeated ways of relating to yourself.

It’s set when you pause before reacting. When you soften instead of pushing. When you allow yourself to rest without justifying it. When you choose presence over pressure.

These moments might seem insignificant, but they’re cumulative. They teach your system what’s normal. And what feels normal to you becomes the state you manifest from.

Why Forcing Doesn’t Work (Even When You’re Motivated)

Many women I know are deeply capable, intuitive, and thoughtful...but they’re also tired. They’ve tried to manifest from willpower, discipline, or constant self-improvement, and it’s left them feeling disconnected from themselves and plain frustrated.

Forcing alignment never actually creates alignment. It creates performance.

And performance is exhausting. I would know, I've been there.

When manifestation becomes something you have to manage or maintain, it stops being generative. It becomes another source of stress, another way to measure yourself against an ideal.

Self-care, when practiced as orientation rather than obligation, dissolves that pressure. It allows your desires to arise from a place that feels honest and sustainable.

Self-Care as Frequency-Setting

This is the shift I’m holding this year, both personally and in my work. Self-care is how you set the frequency for your life—not by doing more, but by creating the inner conditions that allow the universe to meet you with clarity and ease.

When your nervous system feels supported:

You trust yourself more.

You recognize what’s aligned more quickly.

You stop chasing things that don’t actually feel good.

You allow yourself to receive without guilt.

This doesn’t mean everything becomes effortless overnight, but it does mean that you’re no longer fighting yourself. You're instead allowing yourself to float downstream and not getting stuck in the branches so often.

Beginning Where You Are

If there’s one thing I want you to take from this, it’s this: you don’t need to overhaul your life to shift your frequency. You don’t need perfect routines, constant motivation, or a clear five-step plan.

You just need permission to care for your inner world without turning it into another job.

Start where you are. Notice how you feel. Choose what feels supportive rather than impressive. Let self-care be less about fixing and more about listening.

From that place, everything you’re asking for has a chance to meet you.

While the notion of living for yourself may at first come off as sounding selfish or absorbed, it’s actually the complete opposite and benefits far more people than just yourself.

When you start living for yourself, you begin radiating such magnetic and attractive energy. Why? Because you stop placing the responsibility for your happiness onto others. How do you feel when someone looks to you for their happiness? Not very good or free, right?

You also begin living from a place of joy and inspiration, because you’re filling your own cup first, and this then overflows onto the loved ones in your life. They benefit when you take care of yourself first.

No one wants someone who lives for them or drains themselves sacrificing for everyone around them, only to then complain like martyrs about it.

Do you want to get a life? To be happy no matter what others are doing around you? To be excited to wake up in the morning and live from a place of deep satisfaction and self-love? Then it’s time to start practicing the art of living for yourself.

<img decoding="async" width="1000" height="1500" data-pin-description="Discover the key steps to reclaiming your life and prioritizing your own happiness with this guide on how to start living for yourself.

What does it mean to live for yourself?

To live for yourself means to prioritize your needs, wishes, and desires. This is not done at the expense or demise of others but from a place of taking care of yourself so you are the best version of you.

Done correctly, it removes the burden from your loved ones of trying to make you happy and creates a very attractive and delicious energy for others to be in when around you.

A person who lives for themselves looks like someone who has varied interests and hobbies they partake in. They value themselves and therefore take care of their mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. They protect their time and space because they recognize they’re worthy of that, versus allowing their plans to change on any whim.

I was raised to be a people pleaser, to remove all selfishness to serve others. Which, side note, is a funny concept when you think about why a person wouldn’t want YOU to be selfish so that you can appease THEIR wishes.

Here in the South, you grow up hearing the term “good woman” being applied to women who put themselves last and serve their families. When I think about these “good” women in my family though, they never seemed truly happy or lit up. How could they be when they spent the majority of their time living their lives for others? I know how draining and tiring that becomes. The payout is never worth the sacrifice.

Now think about when you get to spend time with someone who has their own life, interests, and hobbies. How does it feel to be around a person who is lit up and excited about life? Typically, it feels energizing and inspiring. You want to be around them more and you find them to be fascinating. There’s no burden to please them because they please themselves, making you free to be yourself with them and vice versa.

If everyone would start living for themselves, we’d all become a lot more lit up as a collective.

Side effects of not living for yourself

Not living for yourself has some serious consequences on your mental, emotional, and spiritual health. While certain phases of life require deep levels of self-sacrifice (early parenthood, disabled children, being a caretaker for a loved one, etc) the majority of your life and focus should be on living for yourself.

If you can’t yet love yourself enough to live for YOU, love others enough to do it, because it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give.

When we live from a place where we are dependent on others for our happiness, when we don’t prioritize our own well-being and happiness, the following can occur:

depression

lack of desire

jealousy

low self-esteem

feeling disconnected

blaming others

resentment

not knowing oneself

feeling helpless

feeling dependent

fatigue & exhaustion

low quality of life

low vibration/frequency levels

neediness, which is repelling to others

victim mentality

Benefits of living for yourself

When you start living for yourself, you light up. Since you aren’t looking to others to fill you up and make you happy, you get to be in control of taking care of yourself, and no one does a better job of that than you!

You are the greatest lover and soulmate you’ll ever have. When you start living for yourself, you will experience:

happiness & joy

increased self-love

knowing yourself on deeper and deeper levels

discovering new things about yourself

high self-esteem

feeling contented

increased love for others

excitement for life

increased opportunities, invitations, and overall good things happening to you more frequently because you are VIBING HIGHER

being more magnetic and appealing to others

real connection with others vs codependency

increased mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health

self-dependency

independence

the feeling that you are your own best friend

Ways to start living for yourself

Let’s get a life, shall we? Whether you’ve found yourself in a rut and want to start fresh, or you’ve never lived for yourself and this is your first time, here are some simple ways to start living for YOU.

1. Create a new roadmap

Getting clear on the direction you want to take is always a first step no matter what it is you’re doing. In order to start living for yourself, you need to get clear on a few things. I recommend getting out a journal and answering the following questions:

What currently drains me

What makes me feel worse after doing it

If I had to guess, what needs to be cut/reduced from my life

Take a minute to close your eyes and envision a you who lives for themselves. Feel into their energy, joy, and excitement. Answer the following questions afterward:

What did you see yourself doing

What WEREN’T you doing

In what ways did your life look improved

How did you feel

2. Start small

What’s one thing you could start doing today to begin living for yourself? It’s easier to start small versus trying to overhaul your entire life.

Maybe you begin a morning self-care routine or start taking a class in something you want to learn about. Ultimately, it’s a mindset shift you’re making rather than trying to do all of these external things differently.

The mindset shift is making your decisions from a place of serving your highest well-being or joy in that moment. This also looks different for different types of people.

I’m a very free-flowy person and benefit when I get more structured. A type-A kind of person though might benefit from letting their lives flow a little bit more rather than putting such pressure on themselves every day.

3. Limit social media

Another tip, especially if you don’t know where to start, is to just try disconnecting from your phone for a while. We are on our phones so much more than we realize. When I put my phone down, even for an hour or so, I notice such a marked difference in my energy.

Not only does social media shape the way we feel and think, but it also pulls us in for much longer than we were ever anticipating. I’m not against social media…there are so many wonderful things about it…but being more mindful about how we use it can produce such massive results in our energy.

In addition, as women and feminine energy beings, our energy fields are receptive, meaning that we need to take extra care in what we allow to enter. Social media can have a much deeper effect on you than you may realize, as it’s quite literally the energy of others entering your field. The effects can linger, making you feel vague about what you want to be doing in your own life because you’ve got so much energy from others in your field.

Disconnecting from social media gives you a chance to connect with yourself. This in and of itself is a way to start living for yourself, even if you’re not sure what to do. Just being with yourself is a great first step.

4. Show up for yourself

Pulling yourself out of a rut, or a way of being, takes some willpower and dedication. Again, I’m a free-flow type of person, so I don’t really like the word discipline, but it does take that, especially at first.

Showing up for yourself, by any means necessary that works for you, is what’s required when you begin to live for yourself. You’re likely so used to doing for others or putting other’s needs before yours. Or you’re used to relying on others for your happiness or your plans for the weekend. You may be used to forfeiting what’s best for you in the moment to appease someone else.

Living for yourself means honoring yourself–your time, your body, your space, your emotions…your well-being. This can look like not changing your plans at the last minute just because someone calls you and asks you to do something else (unless that idea is more fun or doesn’t detract from what’s best for you).

Don’t be afraid to be alone with yourself. You truly are the best friend and soulmate you’ll ever have, so get to know YOU. Have date nights with yourself. Do things you love doing. Read books that excite your spirit. Treasure yourself.

The more you fall in love with yourself and your own life, the more you allow beauty and joy to pass through again and again. Enjoy it rather than trying to grasp and hold onto it. You are your home, here to witness and experience all the love the Universe wants to send your way.

When we start living for ourselves, our lives and experiences become richer, calmer, and more deeply fulfilling, which benefits everyone in your life all the more. I invite you to start right now.

Going through life disconnected from yourself feels haphazard and as if you are at the whim and mercy of every wave life seems to send your way. Life isn’t really doing that though, you just aren’t currently rooted within yourself.

In this article, I discuss how to find yourself again when you feel lost, ranging from getting clear to utilizing self-care to letting go and moving forward.

Photo by Raphael Renter | @raphi_rawr on Unsplash

Understanding how to find yourself again

When you find yourself feeling anxious, stressed, or uncomfortably aimless a majority of the time, it’s an indication that you aren’t connected from within.

Being rooted within yourself provides an inner sense of calm, stability, and trust no matter what appears to be happening on the outside. This is our natural state and it’s why we feel called to come back to our center when we’ve become disconnected.

I always picture The Truth of who we really are to be like a bright light, and when we turn around and face the dark for too long we feel lost, anxious, unsure, and uneasy in life.

Taking the time to reassess your life is like turning yourself back toward The Light, which then gets you back on solid ground with deepening roots.

How to find yourself again

Let’s discuss some processes that will help you to come back to yourself when you’ve been feeling out of alignment and disconnected.

Some of these steps are a one-time activity, while others are things you’ll want to incorporate into your daily routine to nurture your connection with self.

1. Self-reflect to get clear

Journaling is one of my top used, daily self-care practices because it is so very helpful in untangling the thoughts and emotions going on inside of you.

I love different journaling prompts, but the ones I would recommend when you want to get clear would be:

how I’ve been feeling

how I want to begin feeling

Why are these two prompts so powerful? Because the first one helps you sort out where you’ve been and currently are, and the second one helps you to focus in on how you want to feel.

How you want to feel is more important than what you want to accomplish or experience, because behind what you want to accomplish and experience is a feeling anyway. By getting clear on how you want to feel, you create a guiding light that will attract to you the experiences, people, and actions that will create that feeling within you.

2. Identify core values

Respect, loyalty, courage, integrity, kindness, curiosity, open-mindedness, compassion, independence–these are just a few examples of core values.

Just like knowing how you want to feel helps you to attract feeling that way more often, knowing what truly matters to you acts like a compass that will guide you through your daily actions and decisions.

If curiosity is one of your core values, by acknowledging this you will find yourself being less judgmental or hesitant when difficult situations pop up because you’re reminded that it’s important to you to be relaxed and open to life.

I think it’s helpful to have your core values written down and stored in a place where you can see them often, like on a notes app or a desktop screensaver.

As we develop and expand, our core values shift and change, so doing this exercise once a year is very beneficial. When you feel lost, creating a list of your core values will act like roots grounding you and helping you to feel clear.

3. Mapping it out

There is something so powerful and magical about writing down what you want. So often I have found old journal entries detailing what I wanted my life to look like and was shocked at how many of those things had come to pass.

Get out a piece of paper and make a few categories in your life that are important to you, such as career, relationships, health, finances, fun, etc. Under each one, write down your ideal wishes and desires for that category.

You can then write it all out like it’s already happened. Bob Proctor said in The Secret to start it out by writing “I am so happy and grateful now that…” and then fill it all in as if you’re telling someone the good news of how your life is now.

Clarity is key when it comes to attracting the people, circumstances and opportunities into our lives that will bring those visions out of the ethers and into the physical.

4. Self-care: giving yourself what you need

Self-care is doing certain things every day that help you stay centered and rooted within yourself. It also includes those things that you might not necessarily feel like doing but that improve your overall well-being.

Get out another sheet of paper and create two categories. At the top of one side, put “Things that make me feel disconnected/bad” and on the other side “Things that make me feel connected/good”.

Some examples in my own life of things that make me feel disconnected are too much social media, not spending time outside, a messy house, cluttered drawers, etc. Things that make me feel connected are meditation, reading, quiet time, journaling, cleaning, exercising, going for walks, long baths, doing my finances, spending time with my kids, etc.

Some of these things I like to do daily and others weekly or monthly. Look at your list and come up with a self-care routine that works for you.

It is so incredibly helpful to become aware of the behaviors and actions we are taking that are to our detriment and replace them with activities that make us feel calm and connected inside.

5. Assessing relationships

Our relationships are probably the biggest factors in our lives when it comes to our quality of life and satisfaction. It’s important to be as honest as you can be with yourself when assessing your relationships and where you want them to be.

Make a list of the important people in your life that you interact with frequently. Under each name, assess whether the relationship is in good standing or if you’d like to improve it. Does more quality time need to be spent with this person? Or perhaps less time would be more healthy.

If a relationship is less defined but takes up a significant portion of your energy, perhaps place some boundaries around it to seal up any energy leaks. Define what you get from the relationship and what you are willing to give to it, and don’t allow yourself to do more than that.

6. Exploring new interests

Having hobbies and activities that you do on a regular basis brings more energy and fun into your life.

I started bowling with my sons once a week and now the entire staff knows us as well as the other regulars that bowl there on the same days. We’ve learned so much about bowling but most importantly, we laugh and bond every Thursday afternoon at the bowling alley.

Exploring new interests could include anything that you’ve ever enjoyed doing to things that you’ve been curious about. If you’ve always wanted to crochet, go get some beginner tools and crochet something! Start going on hikes, or cooking things you’ve never made.

Trying new things helps you to explore yourself and brings more pleasure into your life.

7. Mindfulness & meditation

Being present in our lives and connecting to the stillness within is a huge component in feeling grounded and rooted. Mindfulness is bringing yourself into the present moment as often as you can throughout the day.

The power in this practice is that you become less and less lost in the “illusion” and drama of life, and more connected to the observer that is always present within. You are lifted up into the bigger picture rather than being lost in the woods.

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a book I highly recommend to anyone who wants to become more present, more detached, more centered, and more at peace. I was going through extreme health anxiety at the time that I read the book, and it not only brought me out of anxiety but also showed me the immense joy that could be felt no matter what I was doing or who I was doing it with.

Meditation is another practice that will keep you connected within. This can be done for fifteen minutes after waking, or before going to bed, or anytime you’re able to find the opportunity. You can meditate with the intention to silence your mind, or do one of the many guided meditations that are found all over the internet.

I personally recommend Hemi-Sync meditations simply because it’s the only technology that will put your brain into a meditative state, therefore helping you to get deep even when you’re feeling distracted.

8. Aligning with your passion

Lots of people stress over figuring out their passion or calling. I don’t believe we all have one purpose that we have to figure out. If there is a purpose for your life, it will show up when it's meant to. I don’t believe something as important as your purpose or calling would pass you by because you were never able to figure it out.

I do believe though that when we are in alignment with ourselves, we receive communication from our higher selves in a much clearer way and will be guided to whatever it is that is in our highest good at that time.

If money weren’t an issue, what would you like to be doing? That’s an ongoing question I ask myself. Don’t stress if you don’t have an answer to that. In some seasons of your life, the answer might be something like “I’d be chilling every day and just enjoying my life!”

Let that be a good enough answer if that’s where you are. It’s more than good enough, truly. But rather than trying to figure out what your passion or calling is, understand that it’s more about coming into alignment with yourself first, and from there receiving and following the ideas that come to you.

9. Overcoming challenges

When you take the time to restructure your life and are super excited about it, disappointments and challenges that crop up can feel extra defeating.

You messed up, did this thing again you really wanted to not repeat, and now you’re feeling regretful and awful. Maybe you slipped back into a habit that disconnects you from yourself and it makes you feel hopeless.

Understand first that this is normal. Babies that are learning to walk fall down and what do they do? They get back up. We aren’t after perfection, after all. We’re only after alignment with our true selves, and mistakes are actually experiences that give us greater clarity about what we do want.

It’s important to remain surrendered and open, with compassion towards yourself and others. You can always pivot and ask yourself “what feels like a good idea for me to do right now?” If you had a drink and regret that action, it might feel like a good idea to tidy up the kitchen and go to bed early. Or if you yelled at your child, it might feel like a good idea to go spend some quality time with them.

You’re not asking yourself what you should do, but what would make you feel good in this moment. This is because you’re always being sent breadcrumbs of love and fun from your higher self, and you can tap into this when you get still and really feel into the answer. It will excite you in some way, or just feel like a really good idea to do.

The way I see things, we exist forever, therefore you have eternity to learn, grow and expand. Mistakes are part of the process. Everything is on a continuum. All of your experiences hold purpose and clarity, so let go and flow. The more you can forgive yourself and have compassion, the lighter and higher you go in frequency where all the fun things you want to experience are.

10. Conclusion: embracing yourself

Trusting where you are is paramount. Understand that your thoughts and emotions create your reality, and trust the inner work that you’ve done to map out your desired life.

Embrace the disconnected period you’ve been in because it gave you clarity. Trust that you are always in the right place at the right time. Know that you get what you expect, so check in daily by asking yourself what you’re expecting in any category of life that is important to you.

If it’s not what you mapped out in your ideal scenario, intentionally spend a few moments adjusting your expectations to the desired outcome. Being mindful, present, and intentional are just daily practices that you keep doing despite any setbacks or mistakes.

Flowing, being open, staying curious, loving yourself, trusting the universe, and expecting the best will shift your life in such beautiful ways. You’ve got an eternity to practice, so don’t get too hung up on anything. Embrace yourself, embrace this life experience, and practice having more fun. Wash, rinse, repeat!

In order to actually feel better, I have found that absolute presence with ourselves is all it takes to come back into alignment with who we truly are.

When I was younger, I ran from heavy feeling emotions. Like a child running from a monster that doesn't exist, this is what most people do when confronted with their own painful emotions. Presence is turning on the light and seeing that your fears don't really exist. They're all illusions of your own making.

The only thing separating you from inner peace is simply a belief you're holding. These beliefs range from everyday type things, such as "He disrespected me," to bigger seeming beliefs, such as "She's gone forever."

We become aware of these beliefs when we are present with ourselves. Dr. Dan Siegal, clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA school of medicine, says on mindfulness, "You can be in the midst of great difficulties and yet find immense composure and clarity."

5 powerful resources to feel better now

In this article, I'm sharing five tried-and-true resources that you can use in this moment to feel better by getting present and releasing self-limiting beliefs.

1. The Work by Byron Katie

If everyone in the world would do The Work, we could never stay upset with one another. The Work consists of four questions and a turnaround. You get present, question your beliefs and turn them around.

The worksheets can be downloaded for free on her website under the tab "Downloads." I also highly recommend her podcast, At Home With Byron Katie. I listen to it frequently and it helps me to recognize when my own mind is at war again.

Most helpful for: Releasing heavy emotions you have towards another (use the Judge-Your-Neighbor worksheet).

2. Abraham-Hicks recordings

There's no better resource for coming back into alignment with yourself than listening to some Abraham-Hicks. Abraham, channeled by Esther Hicks, has been asked nearly every question under the sun and never fails to produce the most logical, beautiful responses.

I simply open Youtube and search "Abraham Hicks" followed by whatever I'm struggling with. For example, "Abraham Hicks guilt and regret". Within minutes of listening, I feel myself softening and taking a higher perspective that brings such immense inner peace.

They also have a podcast called "Leading Edge" that I recommend adding to your list.

Most helpful for: Raising your vibration and turning beliefs around

3. The Power of Now

This book is the ultimate resource for understanding how to get present. The first time I read it, I was struggling with intense health anxiety. The palpable relief I felt while reading Eckhart Tolle's words is indescribable.

I learned how to get present in my body and mind, no matter where I was or what I was experiencing. I experienced personally how presence can actually release physical pain. The most important lesson I learned was that I am always okay in the present moment. It's only in the past or future that I experience anxiety or any other unpleasant emotion.

I recommend the book, but I also love listening to the audible version of the book while doing chores around the house or while going for a walk.

Most helpful for: Learning how to be fully present

4. Journaling prompts for clarity

I'm not a daily journaler, but I have always found journaling prompts to be helpful for getting clear. Confusion can have us feeling ways we can't even pinpoint, while coming into clarity brings us back into alignment with our spirit.

Check out this post for 50 journal prompts for clarity, well-being and healing. I recommend picking two to three prompts under one of the categories, or answer as many as feels good. I typically do no more than three.

Most helpful for: Gaining clarity and direction

5. Spiritual Tune-Ups Podcast

Mike Dooley is one of my all-time favorite inspirational authors and speakers, as his energy is just infectious. His book Infinite Possibilities was one of the first books I read at a point in my life when I decided to change my mindset, which transformed my whole reality.

His podcast, Spiritual Tune-Ups with Mike Dooley, is another favorite go-to resource for feeling better. He answers questions from his audience on the podcast–things like how to be in the world but not of it, manifesting things we don't like, and harder subjects such as suicide and evil acts.

Why is this helpful for feeling better? Because he always takes a higher, loving perspective that makes logical sense. A lot of times we talk to those around us when we aren't feeling good, but their own self-limiting beliefs can get in the way of their answers.

It's very beneficial to know of people who can answer hard questions from a place of alignment and truth. Mike is one of those people.

Most helpful for: Cheering up and taking a practical approach to life with a high vibe mindset

Tangible actions to take for a mood boost

Now that I've shared my five favorite resources for turning your mind around, here are some tandem physical actions you can take in the moment to feel better.

Take a short break from whatever you're doing

Even if all you're doing is wallowing in despair on your couch, take a break and do something else. The change up can get your mind off your (illusory) issue at hand and make room for new inspiration to flow in.

Often I do something I need to get done anyway, like house chores or mindfully making a meal. I put my headphones on and listen to one of the above podcasts while I work. It's a win-win.

Get some sunshine or fresh air

If the weather permits, it can really help to go outside, even if only for a few minutes. Screens, phones going off, and other forms of technology-produced stimuli, such as social media, can overwhelm and fatigue us.

Health writer Emily Swaim says "This ongoing overstimulation may raise your stress levels without you even realizing it. The natural world, on the other hand, can offer a mental and emotional refuge when you need to unwind and recharge."

Being in nature, especially if you observe the sounds and sights, help to also bring us into the present moment.

Move your body

Stretching, dance, yoga, or running are all activities that can help move you into your body and out of your mind. Exerting our bodies help us to relieve the tension and is good for your health in general.

I like to take a walk in my neighborhood, again with an ear bud in one ear on a low volume, and listen to The Power of Now. It's better than therapy for me.

Diffuse a bad mood with this question

I got this from Abraham-Hicks and it always helps me move in a better-feeling direction. The question to ask yourself is, "What can I do in this moment to feel better?"

Maybe it's to go for a walk, or call a friend, or take a nap. Then after that, you ask the question again, and follow the most relieving thought that comes to your mind.

Really think about you're needing combined with what would feel nice for you. Try to give yourself as much relief as you can. This is how we can climb up the emotional scale from wherever we are.

A spiritual journal is a place where you can discover yourself, heal your heart, receive answers to questions no one can answer for you, and essentially come into the fullness of who you really are.

Spiritual journaling helps you gain clarity and perspective on your life, identify patterns and habits, and provides a sense of emotional release and healing. Moreover, it can be a valuable tool for reducing stress and anxiety and improving your overall well-being.

In this article, I'll explain spiritual journals and their benefits and provide ideas and prompts to help you get started.

<img decoding="async" width="1000" height="1500" data-pin-description="Unlock the transformative power of spiritual journaling with this helpful guide.

What is the purpose of a spiritual journal?

The purpose of a spiritual journal is to get you in touch with the "higher", non-physical aspects of yourself. You can also think of it as your subconscious mind. Terms really don't matter.

You've probably heard about the power of writing things down. Why is this? From my experience and research, writing is a form of channeling. You are channeling parts of yourself that you don't typically have conscious awareness of when you journal or write down intentions, for example.

When I was younger, I would ask others for advice. I felt like if I didn't have the answer, then I simply didn't have it. So, I searched outside of myself for answers, which only caused more confusion when the answers I'd received didn't truly align with me.

This is where a spiritual journal comes in. You bring your tangled mind and heart to your journal and watch the knot unravel. You will be amazed at how easy it can be sometimes for answers to flow when you journal. It's as if the answer was there all along, just waiting for you to see it (because it was).

How to start journaling for spiritual growth

If you're new to journaling or have tried journaling in the past without success, I'm here to let you know that you don't have to make this a painful, drawn-out process.

I notice that many people assume journaling requires lengthy daily submissions. This just isn't accurate. A person trying to come up with stuff to put down in their journal isn't getting the same benefit as a person who may journal once a week or even once a month, but focuses on powerful questions.

Keeping a diary and journaling are different. You are not recording your daily activities or every thought. A diary is for recording, whereas a journal is for discovering. With this definition, you can see how daily journaling is not a requirement, but a tool you access when needed.

To begin a spiritual journal, you can either purchase a physical journal or use a digital one. If it's a physical journal, I prefer one that has a ring binder or can lie flat easily. Here are 3 affordable and beautiful blank journals that would work well:

Soar Journal

Spiral Journal

Be Here Now Journal

Spiritual journal prompts

The right prompts make all the difference. If the question isn't powerful, it won't draw the kind of reflective answers you desire.

I have two go-to journal prompts that I use whenever I'm feeling tangled up. They are:

How am I currently feeling?

What current actions/situations are creating this current feeling?

How do I want to begin feeling?

What activities help to bring me this feeling? What activities do the opposite?

I write whatever comes up and let it all out on the page, which feels like taking a deep breath. I then focus on how I want to begin feeling, which gets me thinking about the steps I can take to help that happen.

I have found time and again that realizations, ideas, and answers come through while doing this simple journal exercise. I may realize what is at the core of my frustration or anger, or I may discover exactly what I need to do to move in a different direction.

While I use these two prompts 80% of the time, I have shared more specific journal prompts in the two articles below:

50 Journal Prompts for Clarity, Well-Being & Healing

Spiritual journal ideas

I have used different types of guided spiritual journals. These can be not only powerful but also fun, inspiring ways to connect with your higher self through guided prompts and reflective questions.

The following are some ideas for beautiful guided spiritual journals:

Moon Ritual Journal: I have used this journal for several years, and it is still my all-time favorite. The moon cycles through all the phases we need to cycle through every month: setting new intentions to take inspired action, celebrating our lives, and becoming still and letting go of what no longer serves us.

Manifestation Journal: This was the first guided spiritual journal I used years ago, and it changed my life because it changed my mindset. This is a suitable journal for turning away from a lack mindset and focusing on the good to attract even more of it.

Chakra Healing Journal: I used this journal to journey through my chakras and connect with parts of myself that had been suppressed or never acknowledged. The morning sheet is beautiful and contains reflective journal prompts to set the tone for your day.

Creating a sacred space and routine for your journaling

My space

It is helpful to create a sacred space for spiritual journaling beyond simply finding a quiet place. This space should be tailored to suit your inner self and to enhance your spiritual practices. Here are a few ways to create a nurturing space and establish a routine that invites clarity and introspection.

1. Choose your space

Start by selecting a spot in your home where you feel calm and undisturbed. It could be a small nook, a comfortable chair by a window, or even a spot in your garden. Using the same space can help condition your mind to enter a state of reflection and meditation when you sit down.

2. Make it comfortable

Add items that increase comfort and relaxation. This could be a comfortable cushion or chair, adequate lighting, and perhaps a small table or basket to keep your journal and writing tools handy. Comfort in your physical environment helps to ease the mind into a meditative state.

3. Incorporate personal elements

Personalize your space with items that hold spiritual significance or inspire you. This could include crystals, candles, incense, photos, or any item that lifts your spirit or has a calming effect. These elements will inspire your intention to connect and reflect.

4. Establish a ritual

You may find that adding rituals can enhance your journaling routine. Before writing, consider taking a few deep breaths to center your thoughts. You may light a candle or incense to signal the start of your journaling session. While this isn't necessary, it can help your mind and body relax and prepare to go inwards.

5. Set intentions

Before you start writing, set a brief intention for your journaling session. It could be to gain clarity on a specific issue, connect with your higher self, or simply unload your thoughts from the day. Setting intentions can help guide your writing and deepen your spiritual connection.

6. Keep it organized

Keep your journaling tools organized and always ready. Having a specific journal, favorite pens, and other materials in one place ensures that you can easily begin without distraction or the need to search for supplies.

7. Schedule regular sessions

Try to schedule regular journaling times, whether it’s daily, every other day, or weekly. The regularity of your practice helps establish it as a habit and deepens its impact on your spiritual journey. I typically write in my journal most mornings while drinking coffee. It's a quiet time, and I've gotten used to jotting down my thoughts and emotions, sometimes just a few sentences.

8. Respect your space

Treat your journaling space with respect and reverence. Keep it tidy and free from clutter or other distractions. A respected and well-maintained space helps cultivate the energy and mindset needed for effective spiritual practice. I like to often clear this space energetically since a lot of emotion is released here. I do this by using Palo Santo smoke and fresh air, but even just having the mental intention to clear your space is enough.

The most impactful shadow work prompts are the ones that help you to easily reflect without reliving negative events or getting lost in the muck. Shadow work done right can release you from the past with a single realization.

In this article, I'm sharing shadow work prompts that are perfect for beginners and avid journalers alike. We're going to be focusing on self-love, letting go, and healing.

What is shadow work healing?

The "shadow" was a term initially coined by Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist Carl Jung to refer to those facets of our personalities that we suppress and reject. Shadow work is essentially a type of psychoanalysis, as this is at the core of Jungian psychology.

These unconscious traits within the psyche, which make up your so-called "dark side", can be seen through our impulsive actions and self-sabotaging beliefs. They are usually the result of past traumatic events, painful experiences, and old memories.

Our shadow selves come out when we're triggered by others, or when our mental health is struggling with depression or anxiety. "Everyone has their demons" is another way to say that everyone has a shadow side. Shadow work shines light on these hidden aspects and asks "what are you here to teach me?"

Journaling is a form of meditation, which is why shadow work prompts can bring such enlightening insights, healing, and release from the subconscious impulses and strong reactions that you're ready to let go of.

What does it mean to do your shadow work?

One aspect of doing your shadow work means acknowledging and transmuting painful parts of your past into a higher awareness or perspective. Most of us have stories about our pasts that don't serve us. In fact, these stories usually hurt and hinder us, which is why we'd rather push them out of our minds rather than face them. But facing what you fear brings a level of self-awareness that will liberate not only yourself, but others as well.

When you get in touch with your shadow self, you pick up these shattered pieces of the past and hold them with love. You release any shame or anger and allow it to be replaced with understanding. For me, doing shadow work is akin to being my very own therapist. Being able to identify self-sabotaging behavior that can be linked all the way back to childhood is so enlightening and healing.

Shadow work does not involve reliving past trauma or re-victimizing yourself all over again. You come to shadow work when you are ready to release and heal, not when you're still arguing for your littleness. Shadow work done at the right time brings out self-compassion rather than judgment, self-acceptance in place of anxiety, and a higher state of consciousness overall.

When you can acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes, that no one is bad, and that there are higher purposes for everything, shadow work will be that much more healing and powerful for you.

How to get started in shadow work

To start off with shadow work, you want to be in the most stable frame of mind possible. You want to feel relaxed, open, and curious to get the most out of your shadow work reflections.

Avoid doing any shadow work when you feel overwhelmed, sad, or frustrated. Speaking from experience here–it doesn't turn out pretty! Just don't do it, kids. Wait until you're in a fairly good, relaxed mood.

As I said, the goal is to NOT re-live trauma or further traumatize yourself. When you're wobbly in your emotions, you risk not thinking clearly and hurting yourself in the process.

So when you feel relaxed, open and curious, get out your journal and make sure you won't be disturbed. Set the intention that you're going to open a dark closet or two and shine the bright light of love into it. That you're interested to see things in a new light and know yourself in deeper ways...that you're ready to understand.

I also ask my higher self and spirit guide (you ask whatever you believe in) to assist me in seeing the truth. Answers that come from truth will feel relieving and healing.

A note on safe shadow work

Shadow work is powerful when you are ready to do it. It can be damaging if the dust has not yet settled or if you are easily triggered by certain memories.

A recent abuse victim is not an ideal candidate for shadow work, for example. For those who aren't ready yet, I recommend therapy, books, and journaling in general to process thoughts and emotions.

If you find yourself going into a dark place when answering questions, it is perfectly advisable to abort mission. I have backed away from certain memories and returned at a later date when I had more understanding and distance.

There is nothing shameful about not being ready yet. It doesn't mean you are stuck or can't move forward in life in the meantime. You will come around; there is no need to force anything.

Shadow work prompts for self-love

Self-love is a deep acknowledgement and awareness of self. The self is so much more than this surface physical image we see. Self is vast, eternal, and pure loving awareness. It is infinitely more than these stories we've believed about ourselves.

When you begin to develop self-love, you see beyond what has happened to you in this lifetime. You understand that you're more than this one life. As well, you understand that everyone else is also so much more than what you can see on the surface, and that they too come from this spring of pure loving awareness.

Self-love is beyond this lifetime, beyond this surface story you have of yourself and others. Use these prompts to tap into the vastness that is you.

1. Every experience gives you a unique perspective that expands your awareness. Lightly consider an experience you've had that was difficult, shameful, or painful for you. Standing in the place of your eternal viewpoint, how did this experience challenge you? What false truths did you believe? What truths did you finally discover? Repeat this for any other notable experiences you had.

2. Name three loving traits you've always had since you can remember (empathy for others, easily able to forgive, giving, etc). Acknowledge that these traits are a glimpse into who you really are.

3. Pretend that life is a stage play, and your soul is eternal and comes to play different roles for the expansion it will bring you. Consider your "role" in this lifetime and one of the big challenges your character was scripted to experience. From this viewpoint, what do you think your character was meant to learn about who they really are from this experience? In what ways did your character evolve and grow? In what ways was your character made more beautiful and soft?

4. Think of a few people close to you and for each one, write down 1-2 traits of theirs that you really admire. Acknowledge that just by your noticing of these traits, they are also within you, otherwise you could not even notice them.

Letting go of things in our lives means releasing them from a place of love and forgiveness. Holding onto anything is the number one cause of dis-ease and illnesses. When we resent, we restrict our own life force energy from flowing freely in our bodies.

A powerful place to be is when you can forgive for your own benefit. An even more powerful place to be is when you can see beyond the surface appearance of another person or yourself. When you can truly hold all in love and release the stories you torment yourself with.

Use these prompts for assisting you in letting go with love and understanding.

1. "Hurt people hurt people." Think of a person you hold resentment towards or who triggers you in some way. Name 1-3 hardships you know of that they've had to endure in their life and how that could've impacted the way they view themselves and life in general. Now name 1-3 instances in which they showed love or kindness towards you. Sometimes we focus only on our negative stories of someone, which in turn hurts our life force. There is always a more positive story we can find. How many can you see? Notice how much more natural it feels for you to see someone with love and understanding.

2. Lightly think about a period or instance in your life where you regret your actions. Understanding that there are no accidents, and that each experience has helped to bring you closer to everything that you are now, in what ways did that time in your life eventually expand you? What have you walked away knowing from that experience that you didn't know beforehand? Acknowledge the way you've been positively changed for the better because of that time in your life.

3. Lightly think of a situation which "burned" you and has been hard for you to move past. What were the main emotions that were brought up for you? Where else in your life have these emotions come up frequently? Were there any truths (fears) in this situation that you didn't want to admit at the time? It's safe to admit them now in order to let them be released. If this situation was destined to happen for higher purposes, what could've been the healing reasons for you? In what ways did this situation expand you and help you to learn?

Shadow work prompts for healing

Healing is the dissolution of false narratives, stories, and confusion. It is clarity that comes from a completely surrendered state of knowing that all is well. Healing is remembering that you were never broken to begin with.

We "heal" every time we release a belief or story that doesn't align with truth. Love is foundation of truth, so anything you believe that contradicts love is a way that you are keeping yourself in the dark and separated.

To heal, we must question the ego's beliefs and stories, and be curious about alternative possibilities and insights that could be closer to the truth.

1. Physical symptoms are nothing more than messengers and invitations to look deeper. Think of a physical symptom you have that is calling for your attention. What emotion comes up when you think of it? Where else in your life do you feel this emotion? If this symptom tied to this emotion could talk, what would it request from you? In what ways could you begin soothing this emotion?

2. There are no experiences that happen in vain. Pretend once more that life is like a stage play, and you and everyone you know are souls playing these characters you see currently. Imagine that you wrote the script for your life, including the traumatic moments, and asked a loving soul close to you to play this hard role of hurting you for your ultimate expansion. What could've been the ultimate reason behind this painful "scene"? What was it to show you? How was it going to expand you? Really contemplate the answer.

3. Lightly consider a feeling or experience you feel stuck in. Imagine that this feeling/experience was going to last the rest of your life. What qualities would you need to bring forth within yourself in order to thrive despite this experience going on in your background? Consider that you bringing forth these qualities are the very reason behind this experience happening in your life.

Conclusion

Shadow work is an exploration process of stepping back and taking a bird's eye perspective of our lives, ourselves, and others. We move away from the nit-picking and into a greater space of understanding, discovery and acceptance.

When you see that nothing happens in vain, then it must happen for your benefit. Therefore, you must find what that benefit is. This is shadow work. Our shadow side rounds us out and brings meaning to every experience we've ever had.

Freeing yourself from your own painful stories and transmuting your shadows will be the most satisfying work you ever do. The personal growth you'll experience over and over again, every time you question the triggers, will release and transmute these shadow parts of yourself that are ready to be understood and loved back out into the light.
