Healing crystals and stones have become one of my favorite self-care tools to use for anxiety, self-love and self-healing.

In this article, I'm going to share the science behind how healing crystals work and how to use them.

    What is crystal healing?

In a nutshell, your body's cells vibrate at a certain frequency. When a cell becomes ill, its vibration is unbalanced. Crystals and their balanced frequency can help to bring the cell's vibration back into balance.

About a year ago, I purchased my first crystals without really knowing anything about them. All I knew was that people used them in their spiritual practice, they were pretty, and I felt a calming sensation every time I held one.

I placed them next to my bed and would hold them every so often when I felt anxious. At that time, I still just believed it was some sort of placebo effect and considered them decor more than anything else.

Recently though, crystals seemed to be popping up everywhere I was looking. Articles were showing up in my newsfeed about them, I was seeing them inconspicuously in the background of Instagram photos, and information about them was popping up in books and magazines I was reading.

It's like the Universe was coming at me from all angles with the crystals!

Since crystals have really impacted me in such a short time, I wanted to share my research on how healing crystals actually work here on the blog.

They are more than just pretty rocks and the science behind them is really amazing.

    Flourite crystals and amethyst pendulum

    The science behind crystal healing

If you've ever held a crystal, you might've noticed a calming sensation. If you're highly sensitive or intuitive, you might've even noticed more specific types of energy when holding certain crystals. There is science that now backs up this common experience:

Crystals are the most orderly structure in nature because they have the lowest state of entropy possible. Entropy is the measure of “disorder” of the system.

The crystalline structure responds in unique ways to a wide spectrum of energies and depending on the input of these energies, the crystals oscillate and thereby create a specific vibratory frequency of energy emission.

The balanced state of the crystal lattice means that the energy flow through the lattice is conformingly balanced and constant. It also means that when discordant energy enters the lattice it is then balanced and transformed out of a state of flux.

This helps to balance the human energy field and bring about a state of order in the body that is conducive to the amelioration of disease because the energy field has been returned to its natural, healthy vibrational frequency and this resonance influences the physical body to also return to its healthy state." - Belinda Davidson

And here is some fascinating every day uses of crystals that most of us are already using:

Crystals are essential to the functioning of our modern technologies, because of the way their balanced, ordered structure emits consistent frequencies and allows them to store a tremendous amount of information. As I mentioned earlier, Silicon is used in every single computer and cell phone processor, and liquid crystals comprise the display screens of these devices.

Quartz (a type of silicate mineral) is used in watches and clocks to help them tell time, because it helps stabilize and regulate the flow of energy. Earlier this year, The Mind Unleashed reported how a clear piece of Quartz crystal can be used to store data for up to 300 million years!

Galena and Pyrite can be used to make radio receivers that do not rely on batteries. Ruby crystals were an important part of the first ever laser developed by Bell Laboratories in the 1960’s, and it is still used today for its abilities to focus and concentrate energy.

Just this week, it was revealed that a synthesized crystalline material can be used to help human beings breathe underwater." - Dr. Kelly Neff

The science behind healing crystals and all of the studies that have been done are over my head, but essentially I understand it as we humans are made of energy and when our cells become out of balance, the energy from a crystal can cause that cell to change it's vibration to match the crystal.

I know from reading the Emotion Code (as well as intuitively) that I have stored past emotions in my womb area, the right side specifically.

Often times, I will feel light pangs of pain in that area and when I lay certain crystals known for their healing properties on that side of my womb, the pain dissipates almost immediately.

Crystal healing works on the principle that every cell in the body vibrates at a specific frequency. When these frequencies change from the natural resonant frequency (our “healthy state”), we become ill.

Crystals also oscillate at their own natural frequency. The natural healing frequency of the crystal is activated by the healer’s intention. As discussed in the theory section of this paper, energy from the universal energy field is channelled through the crystal.

The crystal then transmits and amplifies the correct frequency to the cells in the body that require balancing. Then, following the laws of resonance, these cells are returned to their normal base frequency which will then bring the body back into harmony and restore health." - Belinda Davidson

Crystals have been used for healing and spiritual connection since the beginning of time. They're from the oldest part of the earth's crust, so most of them are millions of years old, some even billions.

I find peace and connection from most anything that is from the earth, so it's not surprising that we would at the very least find tranquillity from crystals.

    How to use healing crystals

There is so much to crystals that I have yet to learn, so I'm going to share how I'm currently using them. Since all crystals carry a specific energy, they are great for helping you to set your intentions.

For instance, I have a Cinnabar Enhanced Quartz, which is known for carrying energy that's conducive to abundance and success.

Even if there was no science behind crystals, the very action of me placing this crystal in my self-care space and seeing it on a daily basis keeps abundance on my mind, and therefore I attract abundance.

    collection of healing crystals

As I mentioned earlier, I also use my crystals to balance my energy.

When I'm anxious, I will lay a crystal known for healing energy like Flourite, Quartz, or Selenite on my chest. I frequently lay them over my womb area since as I mentioned previously, I know I have negative stored emotions there.

I recently wrote a post on the best crystals for anxiety, so be sure to check that out if you want more information on it.

I have recently begun carrying or wearing Black Tourmaline when I'm going to be around people whose energy doesn't align with mine or when I'm susceptible of being pulled out of my vibration when I'm around them.

So as you can see, I currently use them for strengthening my intentions which amp up the law of attraction, and I use them to heal and balance stuck energy within my body.

    Where to buy crystals

You can either look up "metaphysical stores" near you or visit a reputable website online. My favorite online stores to buy crystals have been Energy Muse, Etsy and believe it or not, Amazon. I created a special page here of all the premium quality crystals and gemstones I've found over there.

There are so many crystals and you could spend a good year learning all there is to learn about them, but what I was advised to do was to simply pick out the ones I'm intuitively drawn to.

It's interesting because after picking out the crystals I felt drawn to, I found that most of them had similar energy. I picked mostly crystals that are strong in emotional healing properties and bringing about love, balance, and spiritual connection.

Let yourself be drawn by color and feel. Your intuition won't lead you astray and you'll go home with exactly what you need.

    amethyst cluster

I keep my crystals displayed on my nightstand so I can always see them, and I also have a special box for them when I take them out for a full moon energy cleanse, which I know sounds like another level of woo woo, but ya'll, I am really beginning to learn that there is so much more than what meets the eye.

As I get deeper and deeper into my spiritual journey, I am seeing how often the spiritual realm is at play in our human experience. There is literally so much magic around us at all times, whether we acknowledge it or not.

We are more powerful than we know, more in touch with higher realms than we realize, and have more loving guidance at hand than we are aware of.

Where do you purchase your crystals? There's not a store in my area and I've been wanting to purchase some, but I also worry about buying online. How do you know if they are real or fake?

You can find them in metaphysical stores or online, like Etsy. I haven't bought any from Etsy but I've looked and noticed that they have beautiful selections and you can find pretty much any crystal you want on there. But Google metaphysical stores in your area first and see what you can find. And here's a helpful article that talks about spotting crystal fakes: http://hibiscusmooncrystalacademy.com/spotting-crystal-fakes-frauds/

I love black tourmaline for grounding. When I'm feeling anxious or stressed, or I'm going to be in a situation that gives me anxiety, I hold black tourmaline or carry it with me. I love to have amethyst close to me when I'm connecting with my higher self or spirit guides.

I've had a smallish collection of crystals for about a year but recently have expanded it and started to properly use them to meditate etc. I have one with me almost all the time at work or when I'm out and about for when my anxiety spikes and I'm fairly sure people around me think I've truly gone off the deep end, but they have made such a difference in my life. I sleep with my favourite rose quartz under my pillow and I keep my labradorite/citrine around me almost always as I'm so drawn to them. It's lovely reading posts by other people who love them too!

Haha that's so funny Bre, I'm sure people think the same of me. The other week I took my huge tourmaline crystal to my parent's house (needed that extra protection LOL) and I accidentally left it on my mom's dresser! I was like omg...I told her it was one of my son's rocks haha! Loved reading about your experience, they've also made such a difference in my life as well. I like hearing what crystals others really resonate with. I don't fully understand the science behind them but they definitely carry energy because I feel a connection with them. Thank you for your comment! xo

I'm new to reading your blog (btw, beautiful site) and using crystals myself, so this was a timely post for me. I picked up an amazonite crystal recently, and keep it with me pretty much 24/7 and sleep with it under my pillow. I also have a big chunk of amethyst that holds a votive candle and the light so beautifully shimmers off the angles of the crystals. I'm looking forward to collecting more, and treated myself to the Crystal Bible which is fun to browse thru, and consider what crystals I might gift to some of my kids!

Thank you so much for all the info! I'm just starting to look into crystals and their properties, I work in electronics and we use crystals on circuit boards for the same reasons. I'm excited to start using some crystals to help with my sleep and to carry some calm in my pocket at work. Are there any crystals that you would recommend for mood stabilization? Not just to enhance positivity, a more grounding and stabilizing force?

Thanks Cindy! I'm glad you enjoyed the article, and that's really fascinating to me about electronics and crystals being used together. It blows my mind. A really good crystal for grounding and mood stabilization would be hematite, black tourmaline, or smokey quartz. I have black tourmaline and I feel very grounded and centered when I hold it.

Yes! I love following your instagram morning routines! <3 I just started playing around with crystals myself and have found that at the very least they serve as a helpful reminder for my intentions, just like you said. The scientific evidence you quoted is fascinating though! I can't wait to dig more into crystals with you.

I came across this as I was looking into crystals on Pinterest! After I read your comment about crystals in a box I remembered having a small box myself as a child. I remember how happy they’d make me feel and am now curious as to where that box is ? Wonderfully reassuring read, thank you.

Wow, what a lot of information in this post! A lot of it I knew from my own research, but I didn't realize science was beginning to back up the claims that crystals can have healing properties,, That is news to me and darn amazing! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. As a highly sensitive person, I am drawn to crystals like amethyst, selenite and rose quartz. I really need to figure out a way to better access and display my crystals.
