A lightworker, which is anyone who wishes to be a source of loving presence in this often chaotic, illusory world, benefits so much from regular self-care. In this article, I'm going to share self-care tips specifically for staying connected, centered, and in alignment.

When we can come from a place of such alignment, we are rooted and strong. From here, we emanate out waves of calming, uplifting vibrations. We can't help others unless we help ourselves first–your oxygen mask has to be on before you can assist anyone else.

Lee Harris, author of Energy Speaks, says "This planet needs as many of you as possible to create the consciousness shift now occurring."

    What is a lightworker?

A lightworker is simply anyone who has a strong desire to be of assistance and serve humanity as it transitions into a higher level of consciousness. As Rebecca Campbell puts it, a lightworker is "Someone who wholeheartedly makes the decision to make the world a brighter place by being in it."

American spiritual teacher Michael Mirdad first coined the term back in the 1980's. He described a lightworker as someone who chooses to grow into a higher level of consciousness and essentially live from that place to benefit those around them.

    The purpose of a lightworker

As we are entering the Age of Aquarius, lightworkers are coming in more numbers than ever because the collective is preparing for a big shift towards higher consciousness.

Old paradigms are falling away. Things we've believed for so long are being replaced with new discoveries, such as thought being the creation of all matter. We are just beginning to realize the immense power of our consciousness and what that could mean for us as a planet.

Lightworkers hold steady in the storms of human chaos and keep their focus on the becoming–not the past. This means their own level of consciousness needs to withstand what their physical senses are perceiving in front of them so that they can remain at a higher vibration.

When our vibration is kept at a higher level, we are able to positively affect the whole planet.

    Defining characteristics of a lightworker

Lightworkers come in all forms from all kinds of backgrounds, but the main way to know that you're being called towards lightworking is your desire for elevating your own consciousness. Bringing yourself out of the dark, illusory spaces of fear and into the light of truth.

Here are a few possible characteristics of a lightworker:

    • You've always questioned rules and traditions that didn't make sense
    • Injustice and inequality affected you, especially at younger ages
    • Your own spiritual awakenings have humbled and opened you
    • You've always sensed there was an easier, more peaceful way to do things
    • You innately know that we are not alone in this universe
    • You love to absorb forward-thinking information
    • You are able to see others in their highest light and potential
    • Positively affecting others deeply fulfills you

As you can see, an open, loving and forward-thinking mind is the main characteristic of any beneficial lightworker.

There are articles that talk about "chosen" people being lightworkers, but to me that's a story that comes from an egoic mind. Not to say that there aren't people who have it in their soul contract before coming that this is their intention, but any enlightened mind can step into the role of a lightworker.

No matter who you are, where you're from, or what you do for a living. If you see more through the eyes of love than you do judgement, you are in a position to positively impact humanity.

    Self-care tips for the lightworker

Self-care is so beneficial for a lightworker because their light only shines if they are connected and tuned in.

If you're out there shining your light for the world, I first of all want to high five you and acknowledge the beautiful light that you are. Thank you 🙏

Secondly, I want to share some self-care tips that I have found especially helpful for keeping yourself grounded and connected.

The following self-care tips are ideas for you and not a "must-do" list. Pick one or a few to incorporate into your life and see how they make you feel, and of course adjust them to your lifestyle, beliefs and personal preferences.

    1. Plug into Source daily

The most powerful thing we can do as lightworkers is to quiet our minds once a day through meditation. Abraham Hicks, one of my favorite teachers on consciousness, says 15-20 minutes is all that is needed and that it will transform your life.

When you meditate, your vibration is allowed to rise which puts you in the frequency of beautifully inspired ideas, circumstances, and rendezvous' with people who will enrich your life.

Abundance, love and joy flows to you when you do this simple daily practice because all of those things are of a higher vibration. Your lightworker battery is revived to green status with daily meditation.

My favorite way to meditate recently is with an app called Beatfulness. It's currently only available for Apple users, but it's essentially binaural beats to help get into expanded states of consciousness. You can find these on Youtube as well.

The goal is to get to a place of feeling detached, which might not happen every time, especially at first. Either way, quieting your mind for 15-20 minutes will raise your vibration.

    2. Ground & breathe

Nature is pure consciousness, which is why spending time outdoors feels so good. Similarly, spending time with animals has the same effect on your energy.

Grounding is necessary in order to slow down thoughts and energy that can make you feel overwhelmed. It centers and realigns you with your inner being.

There are many ways to ground, but a few of my favorites are:

    • Walking around outside barefoot
    • Petting an animal and connecting with its energy
    • Taking slow, deep breaths anywhere that you are
    • Touching plants
    • Taking a bath or getting your feet in water
    • Putting your forehead (vagus nerve) on any sturdy surface (yoga mat, table, ground)
    • Using a weighted blanket

    3. Expand your energy field

Many lightworkers work one-on-one with others or are simply in frequent contact with people who aren't intentional with their energy and vibration, so it feels amazing to expand and clear your energy field.

Clearing your energy field is like opening windows and turning on fans to circulate the air. You want your field to be expanded and free of debris.

This is accomplished with physical movement and exercises like yoga, qigong and tai chi, as well as generally participating in things that make you feel joy.

You can also expand and clean up your field using your mind through meditation and visualization. Simply sense and visualize your energy field surrounding your body and then see it expanding to take up the whole room that you're in.

Another thing that feels amazing is to envision cords attached to you that are from people and situations you've engaged with recently, and then lovingly cutting them and releasing them back into the universal field to be transmuted.

Such a hard homework assignment, right? Joyfully move your body in a way that feels good, find reasons to be happy, and use the power of thought to expand and clear your energy field.

    4. Transmute your own shadows

A lightworker's light can shine even brighter when they have moved through their own shadows. When you notice a recurring negative pattern happening in your life, it's time to put your mining hat on and go excavating.

In order to let go and transcend, sometimes it is first necessary to transmute. Many things can be shifted without shadow work, but the stuff that is causing repeating patterns in your life is the stuff you're gonna want to shine the light of your consciousness on.

I wrote a whole article here about how to do shadow work, but I'll recap the steps here:

    1. Figure out the pattern or issue that is coming up over and over for you
    2. Link the emotions underneath the recurring issue (what is the underlying emotion the issue causes you to feel?)
    3. Connect the emotion back to where it first began in your life
    4. Clarify your new way of feeling and being

The more we heal and transmute our own shadows, the happier we'll be and the easier we'll be able to show up in the world with our light shining bright.

    5. Ask this question all day

One of the easiest, most fulfilling ways to connect with your intuition and take inspired action is to ask yourself "What would be fun to do now?" Or "What do I feel like doing now?"

This stops you from going through the motions like most people who are living their life on autopilot and gives you the chance to take inspired action.

It's also an excellent way to make sure you're taking care of your needs because a lot of times that answer will be something that isn't considered "productive" but it's exactly what you need in order to raise your vibration.

I try to ask myself these questions as often as I remember throughout the day. Some days I don't feel like working, other days I'm on fire to write. Sometimes I realizing I'm craving a bath, or silence, or sitting on the porch, or talking with a friend.

You'll be amazed to find out what it is you're truly desiring when you begin asking yourself directly what it is you would like to do next. It is hands down one of my favorite ways to stay in alignment with myself and inner being.

Hey Jessica, read this piece thinking, Am I really a lightworker? Funny thin is the self-care tips U described is basically jow I'm living my life today. AND I've understood in the past several years, that to me, the only thing that makes sense for me in this world, is to HELP other people. Nothing else matters to me anymore. NOTHING. I am here and OPEN to serve in any way THAT I CAN.😇
