The sacral chakra is the second of the seven main chakras in our bodies and when this chakra is open and healthy, we feel passionate, worthy, playful, and full of life. When any chakra is out of balance or has stuck energy, it can cause both physical and emotional symptoms within us.
Chakras become blocked due to common occurrences, such as stress, past traumatic experiences, and emotional upsets. Not to worry though, because not only is it easy to unblock them, but it’s also a beautiful spiritual experience which includes growth, healing, and connection.

This is my second blog post for this series on sacred self-care for healing the chakras, you can read the first one here about how to heal the root chakra.
Here is a quick, easy-to-understand definition of the chakras from a book I’m currently reading Practical Magic:
We all understand and accept that there is energy throughout the universe–dark energy, kinetic energy, solar energy, magnetic energy, gravity, and so forth. A chakra is an energy center in the body. It is generally envisioned as a wheel or swirl found in specific places along the spine (the word chakra is Sanskrit for “wheel”), spots where our nerves are bundled and our hormones secreted. They are connected by prana, which can be described as our life force or interpreted as our peripheral nervous system. It’s really the same thing–the difference is in how you think about it and whether you believe we have the power to consciously influence it. Qi gong, tai chi, acupressure, acupuncture, EFT, and Reiki all work with prana, though they may call it different things (energy meridians, nadis, qi, etc).
There are thought to be over a hundred chakras, but we tend to focus on just seven of them. In order for the body, mind, and spirit to be whole, each of these chakras needs to be open and balanced. A physical issue with a chakra can create an emotional or mental issue, an an emotional or mental issue that relates to a chakra can produce a physical response. Your body is not separate from your mind and spirit; all three are intertwined.
Each chakra has it’s own color, element and sound associated with it that can be used during meditation to open the chakra. This blog post will cover sacred self-care for healing the sacral chakra; how to know if it’s out of balance and how to heal it.
The svadhisthana, or sacral chakra, is found in the abdomen two inches below the navel and two inches in. It’s in this chakra that we hold our feelings around intimacy, worthiness, sensuality, creativity, and desires.
The color associated with this chakra is orange and it’s element is water. When it’s balanced and open, you feel creative, sensual, desirable, and able to express your emotions. You feel comfortable in your own skin and your sexuality.
Signs that it’s out of balance
Physical organs related to the sacral chakra are the reproductive system, hips, bladder, colon, lower abdomen, large intestine, muscular and lymphatic system, lumbar spine, spleen, body fluids and appendix–so if you’re having trouble or health issues relating to these areas, your sacral chakra is likely imbalanced.
An imbalanced sacral chakra can cause a low sex drive, reproductive problems, genital and sexual health issues, joint problems, back pain, urinary tract problems, being tired all the time, constipation, IBS, muscle spasms, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, testicular or prostate disease, and dehydration.
Emotional signs your sacral chakra is imbalanced: trouble connecting with others, feeling emotionally unstable, feelings of shame and guilt, lack of control over physical desires, feeling creatively blocked, feeling disconnected, fear of being seen as vulnerable.
Below I’m going to share ways in which you can begin to unblock and connect with your sacral chakra.
Crystals and essential oils for the sacral chakra
Stones and crystals are a form of energy healing that you can use to help open your chakras and keep them healthy. You can read my post here about how they work and how I use them personally. You can lay the stone in the area of your body where the chakra is located, carry them in your pocket or wear them as jewelry.
For stones that absorb negative energy, make sure you are clearing them frequently. Amazon has a beautiful crystal chakra set that comes with a crystal for each of the chakras, but here are crystals specifically for healing the sacral chakra:
Amber: protective, healing, deflects negative energy, relieves stress and anxiety, helps to stabilize emotions (good for depression), enhances creativity, relieves headaches, eases pains in joints and ligaments, also helpful for rheumatoid arthritis
Blue or Green Flourite: (Blue) protects and restores emotional balance, helps to release fixed self-limiting beliefs, opens third eye (Green) all purpose healing stone, promotes self-love, removes blockages and self-limiting beliefs, inspires new ideas and creativity, helps to detox the body and heal the digestive system
Carnelian: stone used in sacral chakra healing, treats digestive problems, eases back pain, brings energy, removes blockages that can cause sexual problems, stimulates the kundalini for higher sexual energy, enhances fertility
Citrine: stone of self-healing, regenerates and detoxes your spiritual self from daily negative exposure to other energies, increases energy and drive, uplifts mood, promotes optimistic attitude, helps to treat issues related to the urinary tract, kidneys, and digestive system, helps regulate imbalances in the thyroid, helps to relieve constipation, strengthens the spine, improves blood circulation.
Milky Quartz: helps to let go of overwhelming responsibilities and limitations, balances emotions, enhances communication with higher self and spirit guides, stimulates immune system, protects against radiation, harmonizes all chakras, raises spiritual energy
Moonstone: stimulates creativity, promotes intuition, self-awareness and feminine energies, enhances fertility, protects against hormone fluctuations, heals conditions related to the reproductive system, hormones and adrenal system, beneficial for conception, pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, helps heal relationships with other women, especially with mother figures
Orange Calcite: stimulates creative and sexual energy, helps with depression and phobias, brings motivation to act on divinely inspired ideas, helps to heal sorrow and grief, increases confidence, brings insight, helps to release old patterns, helps to ease stomach related and fertility issues
Selenite: quickly unblocks stagnant energy, cleanses the aura, connects one to the spiritual realms, builds clairaudience, pinpoints lessons and issues that are still unfinished, brings mental clarity, helps to ease back pain, enhances fertility
Sunstone: relieves depressive thoughts, uplifts spirit, clears all chakras, extremely useful in removing hooks and cords from your aura to draining people, removes codependency, facilitates self-empowerment, helps with seasonal affective disorder during winter months, increases self-worth, relieves stomach ulcers and chronic sore throats, helps with rheumatism and general aches and pains
Tangerine Quartz: raises your vibration, especially during chaotic times or after a traumatic event, enhances creativity and sexual drive, brings calm and understanding to past events, aids in past life release, boosts energy levels and self-esteem, encourages forgiveness of past traumas that no longer serve you, helps you to accept change or transitions, helps treat reproductive system disorders, infertility and sexual dysfunction
Vandanite: powerful creativity and energy booster, clears blocks and helps one to focus, powerful sacral chakra stone that helps to strengthen and stimulate sexual energies, helps you to express your desires more easily, encourages motivation and determination, helps with self-expression,
Choose a crystal based on how drawn you feel to it; that crystal is likely what your body/mind is needing the most.
I am very much a proponent of aromatherapy and the healing properties of essential oils. I use them daily and keep roll-on’s and sprays in different parts of my home so that I can easily put them on throughout my day to keep me feeling grounded.
You can buy/make aromatherapy mixtures or you can also use essential oils alone, like a few drops in your bath’s epsom salt or mixed with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil for a massage or dabbing onto certain parts of your body.
Below are essential oils that help with balancing and opening the sacral chakra:
Angelica Root: relieves stomach issues, respiratory support, eases anxiety and stress, detoxes the body, eases menstrual pain, relaxes the body, mind and nervous system, relaxes muscles to prevent spasms, helps purify the blood, helps with ailments related to poor circulation, helps with digestion, diuretic
Benzoin: aids in digestion, promotes and facilitates urination, provides relief from rheumatism and arthritis, helps to reduce stress and improve blood circulation, helps remove excess gas from stomach, antidepressant, relaxant, relieves stress
Bergamot: helps relieve feelings of despair, self-judgement and low self-love, enhances concentration, heals respiratory and urinary tract infections, eases stress and anxiety, mood boosting, soothes agitation
Clary Sage: relieves menstrual pain, regulates menstrual cycle by balancing hormones, treats spasms and muscle cramps, eases headaches and stomachaches, helps to balance estrogen levels, treats insomnia, increases circulation, reduces cholesterol, relieves stress, fights leukemia, aids in digestion
Geranium: alleviates menopausal effects, balances hormones, relieves stress, reduces depression, improves circulation, reduces blood pressure, increases urination
Grapefruit: diuretic and lymphatic stimulant, treats UTI’s, reduces yeast and bacteria responsible for candida, relieves stress, increases detoxification and urination, lowers sugar cravings, lowers inflammation, increases blood flow, eases headaches, menstrual cramps, and muscle pains, increases mental focus, acts as a mild antidepressant,

So much of energy healing can be done through meditation and visualization. It’s extremely powerful and life changing.

One of my most favorite ways to bring clarity to anything I’m healing is to connect with the Divine and ask. I absolutely love using my oracle decks and allowing my spirit guides to shine light on areas I need help with. Affirmations for the Sacral Chakra
Affirmations are powerful ways to reprogram your subconscious mind in order to hold new beliefs and begin manifesting a different reality. At first an affirmation might feel silly, but the more you repeat an affirmation to yourself, the more natural and true it feels. That’s when you know your subconscious has accepted it and your life will powerfully shift.
Below are affirmations to help heal your sacral chakra:

Healing Foods for the Sacral Chakra
Like crystals and essential oils, all food carries specific energy that can help to heal us energetically. The following foods help to connect with and heal the sacral chakra:
- Sources with healthy fats and oils: wild caught salmon, ocean trout, nuts, seeds
- Orange fruits and vegetables: peaches, apricots, orange peppers, oranges, tangerines, mandarins, mangos, melons, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, pumpkin, nuts
- Drinking lots of water
I also love this Sacral Chakra Smoothie.
Physical & Emotional Healing for the Sacral Chakra
Since the sacral chakra relates to our sexuality and creativity, doing activities that stimulate your senses and passions would help you to get in touch with this chakra. Dancing, getting a massage or giving yourself one, and allowing yourself to be playful would all be wonderful ideas. And since the sacral chakra is related to water, taking baths or being near large bodies of water would also be very healing.
Since an imbalanced sacral chakra is most times caused from past traumas, it’s helpful to begin doing inner work to release the past and heal from what has caused you pain. I personally have had the most intense and healing breakthroughs with this book and workbook combo by Louise Hay. It did more for me than any therapist work I ever did.
I have also done so much healing through sacred self-care. Just taking time that I devote to myself has led me down this beautiful trail of deep spiritual connection with my higher self and the Divine, and continues to bring me healing as old feelings and beliefs come to the surface.
Since the sacral chakra affirmation is “I FEEL”, spend time with your feelings; honor them, discover where they’re coming from, see where they’re holding you back, and begin working to release the ones that no longer serve you.
Self-Care Ritual for the Sacral Chakra
After everything I’ve learned while researching the sacral chakra, here is my plan for a mini self-care ritual anytime I want to balance and open my sacral chakra:
Get into your body: start your ritual with doing something that’s always made you feel alive and happy. Dance, write, paint, hike, run, have sex, self-pleasure, do yoga. Allow yourself to let go and just enjoy it. Connect and feel your way into it.
Take a warm, sensual bath: pick a crystal/s that you are drawn to and put it in your bath to help clear your energy field, energize and inspire you. Then pick an essential oil you’d like to use and put a few drops of it in either a cup of whole milk -or- a few tablespoons of olive oil; pour this into your bath water and swirl it around. I also always add epsom salt to my bath to help detox my energetic field. Connect with your body; is there an area you’ve disassociated from? Put your hands on this body part and say “I’m sorry, and I love you” over and over again until you feel healing and loving energy swirling in this area of your body. When you get out of the bath and are putting lotion or oil on, say the same to each body part.
Journal: get in touch with how you’re feeling. Allow yourself to open up and get onto paper any shame that you carry, because once it’s out in the open, a lot of it’s power is gone. What feelings come up continuously for you? What painful experiences have you carried and kept hidden? Write it out, get it into the light between you and the Divine. Ask for assistance in letting go of these experiences that have traumatized or hurt you. You don’t have to continuing carrying these shame-inducing feelings with you anymore.
Receive Divine guidance: if you pull oracle or tarot cards, use one of the spreads above or ask your own guidance questions revolving around your sacral chakra. Let the Universe shine light on areas or issues you may be overlooking.
Meditate & Visualize: do a guided meditation for the sacral chakra, or simply focus in on your sacral chakra. Visualize the color orange and see your sacral chakra spinning in your lower abdomen. Visualize this orange light spreading to any part in your body where you are holding shame and feel the warm orange light healing it.
Awaken & enjoy your senses: eat foods that heal the sacral chakra and enjoy them (tangy orange fruits, savory salmon, refreshing water). Touch your body more often and the bodies of loved ones around you; allow yourself to connect vulnerably without fear or shame. Spend time alone doing things that light you up and inspire you to create. Adorn your body with clothes and jewelry that make you feel beautiful and alive. LOVE and ENJOY yourself.
